Creighton W Phillips
Artist Statement
"I have always been fascinated by different shapes and how they work together to form a unique object… fresh ice on a pond cracking and forming a multitude of geometric shapes; flowers blossoming in a spectacular display of geometry; a spider web woven into a beautiful symmetrical pattern or succulent plants growing into abstract shapes. I look at these various forms and wonder how I can interpret them into a three demential configuration.
I will take a variety of shapes and build a structure by interlocking elements together to compose a sculpture. These sculptures can be free-form or a controlled design. Each of my sculptures are unique in how they are composed and finished. My work is influenced by what I see in my surroundings and how I interpret the visual images I see."

Biography
Creighton W Phillips (b. Bayshore, NY 1949) began his lifelong career as a visual artist creating editorial illustrations for several publications and corporate entities. His professional direction eventually turned to graphic design and marketing communications, while he continued to paint and draw exhibiting his studio work throughout New York.
Phillips ultimately pursued his love for three-dimensional form, specifically focusing on abstract compositions influenced by both organic and geometric shapes and structure. Choosing sheet metal as his primary medium, Phillips cuts, bends, welds together the materials guided by his own detailed sketches and patterns. Once fully assembled, the metal surfaces are treated with a variety of mild chemical solutions, acids and spray paint to create unique effects, texture and coloration. Many of his steel pieces are polished and allowed to create a natural patina. Each piece is sealed with a satin clear coat finish. Phillips is a graduate of the New York Institute of Technology where he studied painting and printmaking. His work has been featured in one man shows, as well as numerous juried exhibitions where he earned multiple awards. Today Phillips lives and works from his studio in southwest Florida. |
